Why you need to stop sitting so much
Did you know between 50 and 70 percent of people spend at least a quarter of their day sitting? Recent studies found that remaining in an inactive position for this long can lead to obesity, heart disease, and even cancer. But you don’t have to take this news sitting down (pun intended) - here are three tips that can get your legs moving throughout the day.
Take the stairs
We know how tempting it is to opt for an elevator or escalator as opposed to the stairs, but stair-climbing is one of the best ways to get your blood pumping. Not only can it strengthen the muscles, bones, and joints in your legs, but climbing just two flights of stairs a day can lead to six pounds of weight loss in a year. With so many benefits, it’s time to get climbing.
Walk off your meal
Everyone knows about that wave of exhaustion that hits right after a good, hearty meal. Stave it off by going for a short walk around the block. A 2016 study found even 10 minutes of walking after one’s meal was effective in controlling blood sugar levels and aiding in digestion. Plus, it’s an excuse to avoid the dirty dishes for a little longer!
Use the ratio
Researchers say one of the best ways to combat too much sitting is to use a helpful ratio: for every 25 minutes you spend sitting, you should spend five standing or walking around. Try setting a reminder on your phone or computer that lets you know when 25 minutes have passed. If your day requires you sit for long periods of time with no chance to stand, balance it out! Counter your sitting with a long walk or several stretches that will help your achy joints.

Sitting is an inevitable part of the day for most people but that doesn’t mean you can’t add in some small changes to your day and get your butt out of your chair! Take the stairs, go for a quick walk - by yourself or get others to go, park at the far side of the parking lot - don’t go for the closest spot. Every little bit helps! Try using a pedometer or tracking watch - anything to motivate you!!
